How to Find a Niche

Research: One Method

Niche MarketAre you looking around to find a niche market, but wondering how you are going to do that? With a multitude of niches to choose from, it is likely to be difficult to know where to start.

Let’s head off the computer and and see what we can find there:

How about Google’s adwords keyword tool?

You are looking for is a niche. By that we really mean a market that has a relatively low number of pages found in a search using search engines. This number (and it’s usually a big number) tells us the  supply or ‘competition’ for this niche. To be successful in being able to profit from a niche we also need a relatively high number of  people already searching in this niche.

It may be what you learned in Economics 101, but  a high demand and low supply creates value. So, if we can find a niche (meaning a keyword or a keyphrase) that has a high monthly search AND relatively small competition then we stand to profit from it with products and services relevant to that niche.

This information can be found using the Google adwords keyword tool where you can find the monthly search results pages and an indication of the competition. That tool will give lots more information, but for now we will just use those parts.

How do we work out what is  high demand and low supply?

When you start to have a look around you will get a feel for what indicates a high search rate and what is a low number of results pages.

Demand:

Demand can be worked out using the Monthly search figures in the adwords tool. There you will see the number of requests in the last month, for a range of keywords or phrases similar to the keywords that you added to the search box. There is also an indicator of the competition.

Supply:

To check the competition more thoroughly, do a search for one of the keywords or phrases in the search engine to find the number of results returned, and take a look at the first few sites to see what you are competing against, and to pick up some ideas for your own niche.

Depending on who you talk to, you will get different definitions in terms of numbers of what makes a niche market. It could be that you can find a word that has over 10 000 searches per month and 2 million or less results pages in Google. Those figures might tell you that you have a pretty solid Niche. Others will tell you different figures, like as in this video.

You will find that there are tools out there that can help you do the tasks outlined above, but there’s nothing like getting in and getting your hands dirty, and using the Do It Yourself method.

First of all I want to thank you for sharing such a good informative article.
Once I tried to work on niche marketing and started a blog for it in the supervision of one so called guru. I worked really hard but after 2 months I found myself standing in the desert where nothing is around me but I have lost all energy and resources to reach into that desert.
I admit what you have mentioned in your article regarding demand and supply and use of Google Adwords I never got this kind of hint during that period when I was trying to get some success in niche marketing.
I wish to learn some good tips and tricks along with some piratical comparison or you can say, some thing to try as my own practically from you if you consider my request?.

    Have a nice day
